Today, like many before, I worked with Ham Shack, to get better at picking out weak signals from the noise, Worked on Spring Crops in the AEROGARDENS - getting ready for first transplant of best 12 Tomato plants (of nearly 30).
Bought a box of turkey loads and a box of hornady critical defense 9mm. $40 for the 9 mm, they were $30 pre pandemic I felt it acceptable, don't have as much of the high dollar defense rounds.
We lost a bee hive over the Winter.
I had noticed a lack of activity, but hadn't opened the box.
All the bees were dead but there was about around fifty pounds of capped honey still in the hive.
We harvested two gallons of it today using our new extractor.
There are still 10 frames left to clean, but they have a little bit of mold on the so I going to put those frames into another hive so the bees can clean them up.
Then I extract again.
You need to check on them from time to time just to make sure they're still there. They're bugs after all, and they tend to fly away.
Also there is periodic hive maintenance that needs to be done to keep the colony healthy.
If you’re looking for just pollination and no maintenance, you’d be much better off building a bunch of houses for Mason bees, or other solitary bees. Mason bees are actually more efficient pollinators than honeybees, and require no maintenance. Obviously the down side is you don’t get honey, but it sounds like that’s not an issue for you.
Worked a bit on my barrel garden. We can’t seem to get the variety of strawberries we like to overwinter, so these will be rolled into our tuckunder garage in the winter to protect them from the -20 degree nights.
In my continuing mission to spend my fiat labor coupons on durable goods while they still have value, picked up a 4’ King Kutter rotary tiller for the new tractor. Looking to do some serious planting this year.
Rebuilt the plumbing in the greenhouse.
I didn't get it drained before the heavy freeze hit back in February and every...single...pipe... shattered.
They looked like spaghetti!
Anyway, got the system repaired and even expanded to service the herb containers and strawberries on the outside of the greenhouse.
We're having thunderstorms move through today, so the system should fill up and be ready to go.
Still need to change the filters at the top inlet though.

That’s pretty much what I’m doing. I had, last year, planned to throw all of this money at the house to get it paid off in the next 3 years. As prices of EVERYTHING go up, I decided the money would be better spent on capital expenses now, since the house is fixed. As of right now, the greenhouse was the last major expense that I have in mind.
