We've been busy Today: Started last Load of 6 Lbs of Meatballs in the Freeze-Dryer; Made an Apple Cake; Preserved some Mandarins (Cinnamon and Cloves added), Prepped Two (stuffed) Turkey Rolls and threw in the Freezer, next to go into the Freeze-Dryer; Ordered Rebuild Kit for Oilless Vacuum Pump for the Freeze-Dryer; checked reloading stores. Half of the Day!

My clearance-priced North American Rescue "bleeding control kit" arrived today, which was a major score. I'd also ordered some Hatch winter duty gloves, which fit well and should serve me well if they hold up as nicely as the initial quality suggests.

Oil change and tire rotation tomorrow. I have one more gas can to refill after rotating its contents out last weekend.

Pretty much of nothing...returning tools to expected storage places, reading up on fermentation preservation, started a Mandarin oranges ferment, with a lesser known probiotic strain...

SWMBO found a towtally kewl Ball Fermenting rig (with a release valve equipped lid, and a submerging spring to keep the ferment covered). Comes with a Quart Widemouth. Curiously, it was one of only a very few canning supplies remaining on a great expanse of empty shelves at the local Wal-Mart. My wimminfolk will allow me to make and eat ferments, but are shy of trying any themselves.

Glue is dry enough to start flexing the new soles this morning. I'll be walking down to the cafe in 'em (about two miles) to flex the joints and make sure the nails stay put...
(Edit note: Well, the glue is just fine. Think my resole job is going to hold for a couple years, maybe...)

Fermenting at Fast Forward Speed: put the Fermenting Mandarins inside the KitchenAid temp-controlled Bread bowl, set it for 80°F, and it is Goin Ta Town!

Sharpened then Mineral Oil treat to all Wood-Handled Knives. Lemoned and Salted, then Cleaned and scrubbed the Butcher Block Cutting Boards, Then gave them the Mineral Oil treatment as well.

Completely refurbished Three Oil Lamps, New Wicks, Trimmed, Filled w/Lamp Oil, tested. Ordered more Oil, Wicks, and some lil bits.

Set a Trap for Feral Cat going after SWMBO's Wild Birds, Chipmunks, Red, and Grey Squirrels.

My wife had errands to run, so I did the responsible thing - plopped my kids down in front of the TV - and started organizing our canned goods. Anything with an expiration/best-by date of at least 2022 got put in a clearly marked box, while anything with a 2021 date got moved to the front of its respective shelf or drawer. I didn't get through all the canned fruit and veggies due to the quantity and extremely disorganized state of those items, but there's always tonight!

Sentinel one

Man is a bad animal...
Cleaned and filled my 2 55 gallon barrels with water, and brought more firewood in
downstairs.. heat and water are priorities in the winter. Power outages are more frequent
up here as the aging infrastructure breaks down. My first winter out here, my mentor Lenny
explained that you have to set yourself up in case you get sick or injured. A normal woodstove
is the best investment you can make. You have heat, you can cook on top of it, or in it, and if
it is wood, you can burn it in the stove. Quite a few folks have gone the pellet stove route up
here. Which is great if the feed mechanism works with the power out, and you can get pellets.
One guy bought a PTO grinder that makes the pellets, so that is smart. 1200 bucks for the grinder,
though. At least diesel is still cheap..
How are you folks set up for water and heat?
