Well, I took a quick look around and don't see anything about stoves

So maybe I can begin with a question or two. Hope I haven't missed the appropriate forum subject.....

I found a Jotul F500 on craigslist recently and finally got it into the house the other day. It's black cast iron and in pretty good shape. i.e. there's a few cracked fire bricks and just a few places where the long trip home and our mile and a quarter steep rocky switchbacks, plus the rachet straps wore off some of the stove black or what ever was used. No rust to speak of. I'd like to treat the shiny areas with something to get back to the flat black look. BUT I hope to find something that won't run me and my two cats out of the place when we build a fire next month or so.

We are at 7K ft. or so in central New Mexico. We should have gone farther north but circumstances planted us here about 20 years ago. We are off grid since`83 and never looked back.

I lost the wife of my life [41 years] last april. Still dealing with her absence. I need to stay active to keep my outlook from fading to black.

Do any of you have any suggestions for something to darken my shiny spots w/o the bad oders I keep hearing about.

I look forward to getting know some of you. I'll try to get to the intro portion of the Forum and fill in some of the details soon as I can

Welcome Ron. Go ahead and start an Intro thread in the New Member Intro section. He have a great bunch here, and they love to welcome new members.

My sincere condolences about your wife.

Maybe you can find some online friends here and learn and contribute with us.

Hi Ron! Jotul's are good stoves. I'm gonna suggest the stove black too. It's formulated to take the high heat. It's definitely that season. I've got a woodsplitter engine issue to troubleshoot - or call on the warranty. Just haven't have enough dry weather to get caught up to all that.

You've discovered the secret to carrying on, after losing your partner. Keeping busy. I'm just about at the 3 yr. mark. Today was our wedding anniversary.
