Water Collection and Catchment

The wife bought me a rain barrel as a Father's Day present, and weeks later, I haven't got it hooked up on account of not having anything in place to divert rain water from my downspout to the barrel. I know there are kits on eBay and elsewhere that address that function, but does anyone have any personal experience or product suggestions?
My first foray into rainwater collection, I used a kit like this:
From walmart. Basically you use a hole saw to put a hole in side of a downspout, and shove in this hollow, flexible rubber dam that diverts water into the barrel via a hose until the barrel is full, then lets any water after that continue down the downspout. Works OK, but you always lose some of the water down the downspout. It comes with a rubber plug to plug the hole in the downspout if you decide to move or something.
