Cosmic rays, primarily, and their effects on silica-rich magma is what sets off volcanoes.

Regarding earthquakes - During GSMs the sun's ejecta isn't enough to sweep aside intergalactic cosmic rays, which allows them to penetrate the earth's crust and transfer additional energy into fault lines. Earthquakes are electric, and the additional electric potential delivered by cosmic rays often sets them off.

John Casey has two great books on the topic - Upheaval and Dark Winter. Both are worth a read!

let me see if I've got this straight - we've got a storm, a regular storm in Georgia headed south west out over hot water in the Gulf and it is going to turn into a hurricane and head West and make landfall somewhere around Texas Louisiana border? Perfectly normal tropical storm formation right there....

So big enough static charges on the San Andreas or New Madrid fault lines would result in "a whole lotta shakin' goin' on...". Good to know.

Yes - there is something called the "global electric circuit" that transports energy from various parts of the world (and universe at large).

Low pressure cells, for example, take in energy from the sun. High pressure cells are releasing it. Then there are interactions with the atmosphere as well that lead to electrical outbursts at various places.

Cosmic rays are extremely high-energy protons that can have pretty serious earth effects!
