Doing the Dave Ramsey envelope system teaches you that quickly.

Yes to more cash at home, for sure! But I don't feel comfortable carrying around more than a grand in my purse and car routinely. I guess because until a few years ago, I never did. Grew up with checks, then went to plastic, so carrying a grand feels like a lot.

So question for y'all... For someone who has cash at home, normally travels max 100 miles from home several times a month, never goes under 1/2 tank of gas, plus has a GHB with too much stuff, how much cash would you carry on your person/in your vehicle under those circumstances?
When I was going to school last year, I wouldn't walk out the door without at least a grand here there and everywhere. I figured that would get me home, get a tire replaced, get a motel if I got stranded down there, or whatever. The other cash was left at or near home in various places but all within a max of three miles from home. I didn't want it all in one place.

If it is a normal emergency (is that a contradiction in terms....) your card(s) would still work for emergencies. If it is a no-card kind of emergency and you are less than 100 miles away, a grand should work to get you home, in my opinion anyway.
