Storing 55 gallon drums on the side?

I’m sure I don’t need to say it, but if the rainwater is being collected from a roof with asphalt shingles it is not drinkable.

Old post but I wanted to update. Having the support for the barrels across the front and back was not enough support. The barrel started to collapse under the weight.

I ran a couple pieces strut long ways, from the back to front (or bottom to top if they were standing and this holds the weight with no problem

Thanks for the update. It looks as though you are plumbing the barrels into a water pump. I see the spigot on the side, but it looks like you may be planning for pumping the water someplace else as well. What’s the plan?

I am running it to a pump and will be pumping it to a water hose spigot for watering the garden and other non potable uses

You folk happen to have a glass five or seven gallon carboy? You can hang that in the sunshine and clean your water for drinking, in a pinch. The plastic, which I see that you have, won't let the UV through.
