Plasma lighters

Anyone familiar with these? Are they worth the money? $30 off. Wondering if I should get one? But don’t want to if they are crap.

I bought one quite a while ago. Heavy as heck, square and sharp edges on mine. Was from "BulbHead" vendor. Charges from USB, using a mini connector.

Holds Charge a very long time. Works pretty darn good. Problem is, since there is no flame that extends out, ya gotta have somethjng that will fit inside the space where the electric arc is. On mine, something over 3/8 inch just can't get into the arc. It is great for lighting thin stuff like paper, leaves, and suchlike. Not sure I would want to use it to light a flammable liquid or gas, unless the fuel is in a thin jet...

I bought the thing to investigate it. I keep it as a distant (fifth or further out) means to get things lit.

If You are New England Batchelor Parsimonious, probably NOT worth it.

As Usual, YMMV, And I am Weird about evaluating things...

I have the one like handload has and agree with his assessment 100%.

I also have the same type In your post B and it is way better.

I think it would be a good addition to a fire kit.

I've had bic lighters go bad in my packs. Sometimes they last years sometimes less than a year.
It's the flint in them, I turned into a chalky substance that wouldn't throw a spark.

You're around salt water a lot, yeah? Also eats ferro rods. I repack my pack several times a year, lighters, batteries, and food get rotated.

Operator errors do not take the king of fire off the throne. Water and oxygen will also kill you. There simply is not a better emergency fire starting apparatus that fits in your pocket. The best tool for the job is the one you're actuality carrying.

Yeah high humidity.
Check packs 2x a year and carry a mini bic always anyhow.

As a stand alone, one touch, always on you.
Sure.
They do have their drawbacks.
Zippy type still reign Supreme with military folks and others.
They have advantages that Bics simply don't or can't have due to design and materials.

Bic lighters don't stay lit when you take your finger off or do well in the wind or in extreme cold.
A Zippo won't explode either.
Pluses and minuses.
Carried a Zippo for many years.
Now mostly a Bic.
Smoked for 45 years so it's my EDC.
