Doing a mountain horseback Elk hunt has always been a dream of mine. I'm not getting any younger and the kids are mostly out of the nest, so i figured it's now or never. I am getting super excited and I'm leaving soon. Thought I would share in my adventure with my OTGF friends.
IF there is service up on the mountain, I hope to send pics and messages to you all real time. If not, then I will after get back. In the mean time here are a few prep pics
First thing was the rifle. (ya always gotta buy a new rifle
) I decided on a Tikka T3 lite (in .308 Win). Suppose to have 1MOA out of the box accuracy. I found that it is true. ( with the right load) Mine shot very well with Federal National Match 168gr, Berger Hybrid Hunter 165gr & Nosler Accubond 165gr. The Nosler and National Match shoot same point of aim and point of impact out to 400yds. (as a far as I tested) I plan on hunting with the Accubonds.
I really wanted to hunt with Barnes TTSX but they didn't run as well and only managed about 1 1/2 MOA. Good enough but not as good as the sub MOA Accubonds. I'll take them with me but just for extra.
My friends all tried to convince me that .308 is too small for Elk. .300 Win Mag is minimum lol. Didn't work. I'm confident in the .308.
