Doing a mountain horseback Elk hunt has always been a dream of mine. I'm not getting any younger and the kids are mostly out of the nest, so i figured it's now or never. I am getting super excited and I'm leaving soon. Thought I would share in my adventure with my OTGF friends.

IF there is service up on the mountain, I hope to send pics and messages to you all real time. If not, then I will after get back. In the mean time here are a few prep pics

First thing was the rifle. (ya always gotta buy a new rifle  ) I decided on a Tikka T3 lite (in .308 Win). Suppose to have 1MOA out of the box accuracy. I found that it is true. ( with the right load) Mine shot very well with Federal National Match 168gr, Berger Hybrid Hunter 165gr & Nosler Accubond 165gr. The Nosler and National Match shoot same point of aim and point of impact out to 400yds. (as a far as I tested) I plan on hunting with the Accubonds.

I really wanted to hunt with Barnes TTSX but they didn't run as well and only managed about 1 1/2 MOA. Good enough but not as good as the sub MOA Accubonds. I'll take them with me but just for extra.

My friends all tried to convince me that .308 is too small for Elk. .300 Win Mag is minimum lol. Didn't work. I'm confident in the .308.

Sleep Apnea has kept me out of the woods for more than an overnight the last few years. I recently bought a Transcend mini CPAP. runs on batteries and can be recharged by a purpose built solar panel.

@Jayclimber guided me into a nice 30 degree light weight sleeping bag. Used in conjunction with a Therm a rest pad and my Snugpack jungle blanket, I should be good for all sorts of temperature swings.

I also purchased a couple of ultralite Helinox camp chairs. 10 days on a mountain and you need a place to park your ass for a while.

I made a deal with my hunting partner. He feeds the horses and I feed us.

Thanks to @Mels, I have a couple of great meals with Mel's taco casserole. Gonna eat it on soft tortilla shells. The pizza mix makes a great bannock bread. To go with the chili and red beans and rice. I cooked then dehydrated some pasta to make a quick beef stroganoff also.

I did some experimenting also so we should eat good. I dehydrated 2 jars of pizza sauce and we will have pizza a couple of the nights. Quick and easy with some store bought dough's.

Breakfast is a combination of @Mels homemade oatmeal and store bought meals. Breakfast needs to be fast and easy. If you all haven't tried it, Mels oatmeal is the bomb!! Way better than store bought. (more filling also)

That little package has 10 homemade oatmeal packets in it. No space at all.

I'm saving the dessert in case we score and want to celebrate.
