Yes there is a minimum pistol requirement. Can't remember what it is. However they generally not gonna have the range I want. In maryland, the law depends on the county. It's like this in many states.

Many straight wall states have limitations on the cartridge. Some have a caliber minimum, caliber maximum, and/or case length at 1.8".
Illinois rifle and handgun cartridges are the same rules: bottlenecked cartridges up to 1.4" long and 30 caliber minimum (300 blk is legal), or ANY straight wall cartridge and any cartridge must have factory published ballistics exceeding 500 lbs muzzle energy.
So I can use down to a 30 Carbine up to a 600 NE if I wanted.
While we're discussing deer guns and boolits, I'm gonna change up my 45/70 ammo. I was scrunched for time and availability last year, and all I could find was Hornady and Barnes solids. They're ok I guess considering I didn't shoot nothing with them, but lead core bullets look a lot better on paper. Underwood loads the 300gr Hornady Interlock at 2350fps which leaves nothing on the table for a whitetail round. Hopefully 100 of those will get me through until I get my loading room built in the shed...this fall/winter hopefully.

Ummm...not really looking at any level in particular. It's all excess in 45/70 for deer. I've shot lots of deer with 45 cal/250 gr bullets @ 1800-1900 fps in 20 ga and ML. They smash deer. I mostly want a reliable expanding bullet that shoots as flat as I can get to take advantage of using a rifle. The Underwood 300 gr Interlock @ 2350 shoots flatter than that 250 gr monoflex Hornady @ 2050 fps. I don't remember if I posted last season but I whiffed on a doe during late winter season. I aimed for a spine shot, and that was WRONG with a 175 yard zero. Clipped some hair off her back, didn't even cut her hide. So I'm going with a conventional bullet, as much velocity as is reasonable for my set up, and zeroing like I know I should have to start with. That Underwood load is good to 120 yds with NO hold off. Thats maximum point blank range based on a 1" target.
underwood is always good they got a defender style round thats excellent as well,as well as winchester
ballistic silvertip 300 gr Nosler Ballistic tips, has a lead alloy core. Remington I like the 405 gr corelokt psp, and the Remington HP 300gr SJHP,and last but not least Hornady LEVERevolution WITH 325 gr FTX ive used all those before or the bullet ,in my own reloads. but those 4 if i run short i will not hesitate to buy a box to run till i catch up.they will all put meat on the table at the ranges you speak of. I did list 1 405 grain Remington round, and im not a big 400 gr and up fan, but that one and the subsonic 410 gr PT Hornady are outstanding add to that fact you can reload that case up to 7 times before yo need to be concerned about it,.and you can fit that suppressor you have been dreaming about.... to harvest them dusky deer.........
I've used many Bullet brands but never the underwood. Do they shoot consistant? That's what I look for. I tend to worry more about shot placement than how much something does or doesn't expand. You put it in the heart they're gonna go down real fast. I'll have to buy a box and test em out

Hornady, to Me, is Like Michelin is to Tires - The Best Commonly Available/Freshest Results of Research. I have personally Never had a Failure to perform from Hornady. I can't say that about any other.
Yeah, there are better Niche/Uncommon Mfgr's that Might have a Few "Outperformers", but Nobody (IMNSHO) has a Whole Line of "Better" performers across their Whole Line.
