Commercial Freeze Dried Foods (MH, Wise, etc.)

I could have sworn we had a dedicated thread to commercial freeze dried foods...if we do and I'm blind, then please combine threads!

I noticed at Walmart yesterday that price of MH single pouch has nearly doubled in the last couple of years. I remembered the pouches being around $4-5 and they are now $8. Same size, same flavors.

Out of curiosity, I checked their website price for the buckets. I remembered them being around $80 (for the classic bucket) and they have increased to $105.

It looks like Amazon is still selling the buckets for about $75-79, FYI. I am going to Costco next week and will see if they still sell them there for price comparison.

I also ordered a sample of Valley Food Storage. Someone posted their sample link before I think. You pay shipping. As an FYI, once you check out, a page pops up that asks if you want to try another sample for $10 (reduced from $16). If you click no, then another screen will pop up asking if you want to try it for $6.40. If you click no again, then you lose the offer.

I seemed to remember ya'lls reviews for Wise being pretty poor.

Has anyone tried My Patriot Supply? https://mypatriotsupply.com/

I hear it hawked on radio programs which makes me suspicious as those type ads tend to be scam/poor quality.

I have some patriot supply, have never tried it. Lol. Got it on promo. Probably from coast to coast 👍🏻

Bronz, I have some Auguson Farms stored #10 can items, and some Honeyville.

I also have had samples of My Patriot. I've ordered seeds from them and was very happy with the customer service. I used to be on a board with the owner, Matt, when he started out. Few years later, I met him at a preparedness expo in Hickory, NC. Very nice fella. He gave me a multi sample package to take home. I've tried one of the soups and it was good.
The thing that bugs me the most about MPS is they run deals on all the multi item kits.
.. Well, I don't want the multi item kits with 80 servings of oatmeal that I ain't eatin' unless we truly are into shtf. I reckon I'd have to learn to eat em at that time.

It's weird, because he started out selling the canister of seeds first. And the coolest part was you could order the standard canister with a good variety. OR! you could customize your canister, choosing what you wanted!

I say all these guys should do a choose your bucket option, and I would look harder at storing more, even if not exactly the best price.

Otherwise, I say MPS is good people at least.

I never tried Wise because everyone says it tastes like poo.

Have you done the LDS thing at a location where you can pack and store and purchase there? Haven't heard that mentioned in a while. I always wanted to give it a try, but never have gotten around to it. I think we have one still in the Greensboro NC area.

Wise is lousy. Doesn't taste good, and you can't rely on their "five day bucket" to be five days. More like three days.

I am not sure about their quality control, either.

Mountain house is the gold standard for nutrition and definitely for taste.

I have some My Patriot Supply because it was very cheap, but I haven't ever actually opened it.

Backpacker's Pantry is pretty good. Taste is very similar to MH. Not cheap though...

I have taken to storing some MH and MREs for immediate use, then going to the LDS Cannery in the DFW area for most other things. And Winco... And Costco!

It has really cheap canned goods, which is mostly what we get there.

They do sell bags of beans, rice, oats, and similar. At good prices.

They sell water storage containers cheap, too. The 5 gallon ones.

They have bulk granola, nuts, raisins, and such too, if that's your thing.

Add a regular grocery store to all that at really good prices, and you've got Winco!

The wholesale cost of meat has skyrocketed in the last year. It shows up at our grocery store, but it also shows up in the production houses. If beef is up 20%, then you'll probably see a 40% (minimum) cost increase in produced goods from that meat. I think the meat price increases are going to do nothing but continue to go up.

You remember Wise being panned because testing showed the moisture content was higher than would allow long term storage even though they were advertising 25 years. Also, among the people who had tried it, the most common comment was "it tastes like ass" - don't know if they meant the donkey or not, but it didn't sound appealing.

I have not personally tried Valley Foods, but the reviews are great and the company seems to be legitimate from what I can find. They also are taking a different approach in that they are aiming toward non-gmo foods and healthier foods, not as many chemicals or preservatives, that kind of thing. I'd be interested to hear what people think of the taste.

Mountain House is the premium brand for meat products. If they say it will last 25 years they have actually followed it through, tested it, and know it really does. They also store and test individual ingredients so when they make a new product they know how long that particular recipe will store. If they are unsure of any ingredient, they will give a storage length for the shortest expiration ingredient. They are expensive, this is a you get what you pay for product.

Augason Farms is great for a lot of their products. I have a lot of Augason Farms in my supplies. I have a lot of Honeyville products also. They are great but be aware if you like to purchase casserole or soup type dishes already assembled, both of them will use soy products for the protein, although they are both good about labeling it correctly. I only buy ingredients, not meals so that wasn't a problem for me.

My Patriot Supply is well reviewed. I have not tasted it. I have not seen anything on testing on their products but I haven't seen any negatives about the food quality either, which in itself says something. Most of the negative reviews have been individual cases of dissatisfaction with customer service (but didn't sound real...)

LDS used to let you go in and do volunteer work at canning the goods to "earn" a discount or free products. That was what they were required to stop or start keeping health records and certifications on everyone who came in to "work."

The website still sells the basics, but they don't have as much of a variety as the wards do. Some of the wards withdrew completely from letting non-members purchase their products, but most saw it as an outreach and continued their ministry of helping people get through bad times.
