2020 - End of the Road Farm

WEATHER has been the bane of my major project this year: the GARDEN. It's been one of the longest springs I can remember here. First, my plow was backordered a month; then - the virus hit and the guv declared us "safer at home", but it turns out my dealer (who also sells firearms) was considered essential. Then the usual learning curve on the plow. Then, the amount & frequency of rain... means that I've only just finished plowing. Disc is next; maybe end of this week - then I'm going in with the traditional hand tools. Potatos are typically planted by Apr. 15 here.

Fingers crossed that this frost advisory tonight is the last one for a bit and that it DRIES OUT some. I'll have to replant brocolli & brussel sprouts seeds; BS didn't germinate and brocolli is trying hard to damp off. Hasn't been enough sun. Even the direct seeded spinach in the kitchen bed is taking it's own sweet time.

Sigh; hopefully - it only means the season has shifted a month or two and NOT that it's going to be a short season.

I've learned more over the years from mistakes and bad weather than in textbook perfect crops, because every season you'll deal with more problems than textbook perfect crops and fixing problems when you've got a ton of resources at hand is sure a lot easier than when you are having to go it alone.

I hear ya Matt! It's been twenty years since I double dug fresh broke sod. It's going to be cooler tomorrow - I'll try again. I know better than to push myself in the heat & sun. Those potatos GOTTA go in. So determination and persistence. I just don't have the oomph I did 20 years ago. But for sure, it'll be "right"... when I get there.

Hut is really coming along; flooring will be here next week then they're down to appliances, bathroom fixtures & lighting... and a little more landscaping.

OH... that square piece of plywood between the stairs and the railing covers the hole for the woodstove pipe. It backs up to the wall downstairs, UNDER the steps (which has a closet on the other side).

I know she hasn't realized she needs a flyswatter yet. I just remembered. So I got her an amish-made leather one.

So, with all the work getting Hol's house finished - it's been like pulling teeth with getting the contractor on the ball; he doesn't have enough crew for this many jobs - Mom's bedroom is getting a bit of a makeover too. Wouldn't you know I didn't order enough stone and now I can't find it anywhere? I'm calling the manufacturer tomorrow.

But the old carpet is gone and I have oak hardwood now!

Capt's log - Monday, Dec 28th:

Bright & early this morning, the lovely sounds of construction activity waft up the cliff from the site of the Hut garage getting closed in. This is just a little over a year, start to finish - there are some details yet to complete at the hut; mostly steps, concrete & deck railing. Even mid-winter in the mountains, projects continue. I need to make a call this week on starting the (for now) last building - the metal shop.

Looks like we have a month of reasonably good weather ahead of us. That will help progress here.

Even her new pond is full - that brownish blob through the screened porch and deck railing.
