2020 - End of the Road Farm

OK - who's mad idea WAS it to demo the concrete block surround for the electric fireplace in the master & remodel the bath??! Oh that's right; it was mine. With the Holly Hut moving on toward completion in the next couple months or so... I figured this would a great time to finally change the things I've wanted since I moved in about 4 years ago.

Yeah, it's heavy work. Fortunately I have a pretty strong stout helper to man the rotohammer. (Methinks there's a real reason for that phrase.) But the worst of it is the DUST. We are nearing the base blocks now. And those are almost 48 in long; HALF of which is buried under the fireplace in the living room on the opposite side of the wall. Yeah, I suppose they could be cut with a saw. Or I could go the other direction and build a platform for the bed to sit on, that's the same height. Going to face the headboard area with stacked dry stone veneer, I believe... in keeping with my "early Viking" decorating theme.

The dust is going to get addressed, right after I have a little brewski therapy. (This is day 3; but we rested yesterday.) If I were trying to do this myself, I'd get 3 blocks a day removed... and would be working on this til 2022.

It's not "in your face" viking, though. Just the subtle touches of using rough, natural materials... with some accents of steel in certain places. Not the disney version. I still have to shop for furs tho..... not buying until all the dirty stuff is completed, though.

A fan sucking out though a window or two is needed! You can get plastic to build a wall with a door in it at Lowe’s/Home Depot / Amazon
What kind of furs are you getting? Making a bedspread out of them? That would be cool!

If you're shopping furs, Backwoodsman magazine has some advertisers that deal in such. Also deer hides.

Looks as though it might be time to move appliances into the Hut soon. Siding's here; guys are set up to get started. She's finally picked out flooring; and the wall will end up being stucco.

Word to the wise - greenhouse megastore.com is a great supplier this time of year. Not sure I got my seed starting mix from them; but I was very impressed with the quality of it. (Might've been AM Leonard, which has become my go-to for quality garden & landscape tools. They probably carry N95 masks, too - when we're not in a pandemic.

So I started brussel sprouts, broccoli, 2 varieties of tomatos (roma & brandywine), and sweet peppers. Going to have to order regular 3x3x3 pots... for hot peppers, these got put into 3x3x4 deep. Along with 8 medicinal herbs. That was all my back wanted to do today - need to get my deck box cleaned off so I can use it as a potting bench. Looks like MAYBE one more day of rain... then perhaps I can plow.

I'll get some more seeded directly in the kitchen beds tomorrow - bunching (green) onions, spinach, lettuce, carrots & radishes.

Geezer, those wall are solid poured concrete with styrofoam insulation (used as forms) on both sides. Finished wall is about 10 inches thick.

Well, I worked out the logistics on the plow and once I adjusted the level with the hydraulics... broke up some sod. It's nice and soft... made two passes... but it's definitely too wet to work. I'll hate myself if I don't let it dry out some more. I might give it a shot again tomorrow - but the forecast in the afternoon is for more rain that'll hang around most of the week. I'm so antsy to get this dirt worked up........

Two best days with adult kids... The day the come to visit, and the day after they go home. Getting your privacy back has been a long time coming...

We have a split floor plan, 5 bedroom house. 2 bedrooms on west end, 3 on the east end. Son and favorite daughter in law moved in with us 6 years ago and we are quite happy with the living situation. Son is planning a new house and has informed us that we will be moving with them, whenever that happens. Of course, many feel that we are weird - but I personally could care less what the wife's sisters think (I socially distanced myself from them 25 years ago and I am quite happy - wife is beginning to understand why I am this happy).
